Botox TMJ Treatment

Botox for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) can bring relief from the migraines, facial pain, and other TMD related suffering. If you’ve exhausted traditional methods for treating your jaw pain, Botox is likely an excellent treatment option for you. A conservative, non-surgical approach to treating TMJ, Botox injections are a safe, quick solution to your jaw pain.

While Botox is most often associated with cosmetic procedures, it has recently proven to be a highly effective method of relieving TMD related pain.

How does Botox relieve TMJ and TMJ Symptoms (ear pain, jaw pain, etc.)?

Depending on your specific treatment plan, the in-office portion of your Botox treatment for TMD will last from 10 to 30 minutes.Botox for TMJ is a simple outpatient procedure and you will be able to return to most normal activities within hours.

Dr. Eversgerd will inject Botox needles into the temporalis and masseter muscles located on your jaw and temple. One or both sides of your face may receive injections – depending on the areas affected by TMD. The exact injection sites are determined by your specific treatment plan.

What should I expect from a TMJ treatment using BOTOX?

For some patients, TMJ symptoms can be relieved with the use of a TMJ appliance. Appliances relieve TMD symptoms by aligning the bite and preventing teeth from grinding together. As a general rule, patients wear the appliance 24/7. Other dentists may recommend a special mouth guard to treat and to avoid TMJ flare ups. These guards separate upper and lower teeth – alleviating symptoms for patients whose TMD is the result of nighttime bruxing (teeth grinding).

Will TMD Treatment Hurt?

Don’t worry! Most patients report the pain is merely a small sting – more or less the pain of a bug bite. In fact, we’ve repeatedly heard the anticipation of the needle is worse than the injection itself.

If needles are a source of anxiety, please let us know ahead of time. We’ll work with you to make the process as comfortable and fear-free as possible for you.

How long will the pain relief from my Botox TMJ pain treatment last?

Relief from your painful symptoms depends on a variety of factors. Most patients experience freedom from TMJ pain for about three months following their Botox injection.

When will I feel the results of my injection?

Since the muscles treated with Botox for TMJ are far stronger than those treated for wrinkles, it takes a bit longer to experience the results. Most patients receive some relief within a few days and a significant reduction in pain within a week.

What should I expect during my recovery?

Recovery is quick and painless under normal conditions. Following the injections, you’ll need to remain upright for a few hours to prevent Botox from spreading to other parts of the body. You may need to avoid strenuous exercise for a day or two, depending on your particular treatment. Afterward, you will be able to resume regular activities.

Is Botox for TMJ right for me?

If home remedies for TMJ and conventional therapies aren’t effectively managing your symptoms, you’re a great candidate for Botox treatments. Injections bring relief from TMJ headaches, earaches, and painful muscle contractions.

A conservative, non-surgical solution for TMD,Botox is an excellent solution for anyone ready to take the next step in managing TMJ pain.
