The Definition of Root Canals
A root canal may be necessary when a tooth shows signs of deep decay and immense pain, gets cracked or chipped, or has a defective crown. Mandeville area patients with tooth damage issues such as those usually see Dr. Daniela Eversgerd at Allure Dental after experiencing a toothache or chewing discomfort. In most cases, Dr. Eversgerd is able to save the injured tooth by using root canal therapy, or “RCT” for short. Over the years, RCT has proven to be a less invasive and more comfortable alternative to undergoing an actual tooth extraction.
How does an endodontist know if my symptoms are causes for root canal therapy treatment?
You may be a candidate for root canal therapy if Dr. Eversgerd determines that the pulp, or soft tissue, inside your tooth is badly inflamed or infected due to an injury. That pulp is made up of nerves, connective tissue and blood vessels that keep a normal tooth healthy. When damage occurs to the pulp, abscess formation is possible, which our staff may refer to as a “pus pocket”. The most common symptoms and causes of root canal damage we see are:
- Chewing or pressure discomfort
- A persistent “toothache”
- Swelling in the cheek, jaw or throat
- Tooth sensitivity to heat or cold
On rare occasions, a tooth can have root canal damage without any noticeable signs. In other cases, the root is totally dead. For all these reasons, it’s best to have semi-annual dental exams and X-rays under the care of Dr. Eversgerd in Mandeville.
How do dentists perform the steps for root canal therapy treatment?
Root canal therapy treatment can typically be completed within two office visits that last about 60 minutes each. At the Northshore area’s own Allure Dental, an RCT procedure is performed by Dr. Eversgerd using these steps:
- Under local anesthesia, she first removes the tooth’s infected or inflamed pulp.
- The tooth’s empty canal is then cleaned and disinfected.
- We fill your tooth’s prepared interior with a rubber-like sealant called gutta-percha, and an impression of your tooth is also taken for a crown or filling.
- After the sealant has dried, a temporary crown or filling will be put in place so that you can go home. When the permanent one is ready, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled.
Once the dentists has put your permanent crown or filling in its place, thanks to RCT you’ll have a restored smile that will look great and last a lifetime with proper care!
